"BRIDE OF THE YEAR” CONTEST
Fourteen young women took part in a “Bride of the Year” contest organised by the Christchurch district committee of the Country Girls’ Club on Wednesday evening.
Former brides from Little River, Hororata, Darfield, and North Canterbury entered the contesL which was open to girls who had married between August 1, 1967, and August 1, 1968. Proceeds from the contesL which was attended by about 300 people, would go to the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society, said the district chairman of the Christchurch district (Miss Sonjia Mee).
The contest was judged by public vote. The winner, Mrs Judith Giles, received a sheepskin rug and a pair of sheets. The second place-getter, Mrs Agnes White, won a set of towels.
The parade was compered by Yvonne Keats and the bouquets were made by Julia Gray. A collection of former wedding frocks were paraded, sometimes by the descendants of the original wearers. The oldest of these was first worn in 1868. It was of blue-grey taffeta
with brown stripes and had a bustle. The long sleeves and high neck were demurely fringed with lace. It was not worn with a veil but with a little crocheted hat.
