Life-Saving Remit
A proposal to restrict entries to the national championships and to combine them with the present inter-district carnival will be opposed by the Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Association’s delegates (Messrs M. B. Restall and S. D. Tarrant) when it is tabled at the annual conference of the New Zealand body in Wellington at the weekend.
The delegates were instructed to vote this way when the Canterbury association met last evening.
Only two clubs, Taylor's Mistake and South Brighton, openly supported a change from the present unrestricted entry system used for the championships. Members generally agreed that the present system should be retained but felt that the administration should be improved. Mr Tarrant said that the New Zealand council had a blo£k of 10 votes at the annual meeting and would probably push the proposal through. Earlier in the meeting concern was expressed by many members that New Zealand officials had too much voting power at annual conferences. However, the chance to specifically instruct their delegates to support a, Hawke’s Bay notice of motion to restrict the council to two votes was not taken. Instead, Messrs Tarrant and Restall were given a free hand and the right to move any amendment they saw fit. Officials:—Messrs P. T. Goosey and F. Jackson were elected carnival referees. Mr J. Moore was appointed marshal.
Pioneer Club.—The meeting was informed of the Pioneer Amateur Sports Club's decision to go into recess for three months because of its financial difficulties. Delegates were asked to consider the situation and, if they had any ideas, to bring them up at a later meeting. There was not much that they could do to help the club apart from continuing to hold their meeting at the club’s premises, said the president (Mr Restall).
