RAIL-CARS TO PICTON

“Housekeeping Is Bad”

Rail-cars on the PictonChristchurch run had been replaced with 30-year-old models in which, “to put it bluntly, the housekeeping is bad,” said Mr B Dalliessi, the Mayor of Picton, yesterday.

Mr Dalliessi told the South Island Publicity Association that if the National Airways Corporation let its aircraft get into a similar state it would never get any passengers.

Mr A. D. Dick, Government member of Parliament for Waitakt, said that the policy of the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) was to prune out the dead wood and to give a modern and efficient service on those routes where there was a demand. Proposals were in the wind to provide more up-to-date railcars and restaurant cars.

The meeting decided to invite the Minister to attend its next executive meeting to discuss the Picton service and other railway matters.
