Draw Ends K Cup Chance

"The Press’* Special Service DUNEDIN.

Canterbury A, in a bid to enter the final of the K Cup, played magnificently but just failed to beat Otago A yesterday.

The teams drew, 1-1. Canterbury quickly went on attack and constantly probed the Otago defence with short passing and deep penetration from both wings. When movements broke down the halves were always in close support to return the play to the forwards.

Close marking on defence and concentration on deep covering enabled the team to emerge from dangerous Otago attacks. With inside forwards moving quickly back to link, play switched from defence to attack to keep Otago on the defensive, particularly in the first half.

The rapid flow of the game had the crowd on its toes Canterbury supporters their approval when H. Walker, at inside left, slammed home Canterbury’s goal. Otago played desperately and Canterbury responded in an effort to hold the advantage.

M. Bruhns, at full-back, gave a masterly display. Playing in her home town had been an unnerving experience for this New Zealand player.

Canterbury’s All Black goalkeeper, B. Makinson, completed the tournament on a very high note with an impressive display in goal. No final is likely to produce hockey of a higher standard than this game. Otago’s goal in the final 10 minutes put paid to Canterbury’s chances of returning with the K Cup. Canterbury B was disappointing in the final game against Wellington, losing 3-1.

The team held a territorial advantage but was unable to press home against a determined defence. Both S. Turner and D. Eddy made good ground on the wings, and LBayliss, at left inner, worked tirelessly. But hesitancy in going to the ball and in shooting cost opportunities of scoring. G. Phillips had to leave the field and J. Menat went on at right inner, with |A- Howman moving to centre forward.

P. Hume, at right full-back, in her first big match, acquitted herself well, clearing strongly to her wing and I covering welt

Canterbury’s goal was scored from a beautiful shot by G. Phillips, from a wellexecuted pass by D. Quinn. J. Wilson, in goal, played a

most successful tournament. Her kicking was determined and she remained cool under fire.

Throughout the tournament the team played constructive hockey, with controlled passing and sound defence.
