ORCHESTRAL GRANT

The restoration of its grant to §lB,OOO is being sought by the Christchurch Civic Orchestra Foundation from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. Recently the grant was cut by $13,000 to $5OOO. The president of the foundation (Mr G. A. G. Connal) said yesterday that failure to have the grant restored in full will seriously embarrass the foundation.

Mr Connal said if the council did not accede to the request, the foundation would have to try to obtain funds elsewhere.

“We need the money before the end of the financial year if we are to continue with our work,” he. said. The recent cut seemed quite extraordinary, said Mr Connal, in view of the Government increasing its grant to the council from $60,000 to $160,000.
