GROCERY PRICES START TO RISE
Prices of some groceries are beginning to rise in Christchurch after the lifting of the price freeze. According to the retailers, the increases are mostly for goods imported since devaluation.
They say that this is the reason why lib packs of Australian died apricots have increased from about 60c to 77c for choice large variety and 73c for standard large. This is
an increase of from 13c to 17c per lb. Rennet in 4oz bottles has risen by 3c to 31c. Dessicated coconut has jumped by 15c per lb to 39c per lb since the freeze was lifted. Retailers say that the coconuV market in Ceylon, Tonga and the Philippines has “gone crazy.” Some brands of haircream have risen by 2c. A beef steak casserole has gone up by about 2c a 16oz tin. One Christchurch distributor attributed this rise to the high price of beef. A brand of mincemeat has risen by about 2c a 16oz tin. A distributor said this rise was probably caused by an increase in the price of-some imported ingredients after devaluation. Many retailers say that moves in prices through the 5 per cent general wage order have not really started yet. They expect more movement in a month.
