VIETNAM POLICY
Debate Is Postponed
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
CHICAGO, August 28.
Weary Democratic convention delegates, chanting “Let’s go home, let’s go home,” today forced an adjournment of the stormy showdown debate on Vietnam policy. Discussion of a proposed pledge of an “unconditional end to all bombing in North Vietnam,” demanded by a minority of the platform committee, was postponed until tomorrow at the insistence of noisy and unruly delegates. It had been the hope of the convention officials to have the platform approved so that they could devote the third day entirely to choosing a candidate to oppose the Republican, Mr Richard Nixon.
U.S. Brokers Accused
(N.Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
WASHINGTON, August 28 The United States Securities and Exchange Commission has ordered proceedings against Merrill Lynch, the world’s largest public brokerage firm, on charges of fraud. The S.E.C. said the firm and 14 of its executives violated the provisions of the Exchange Act in connection with their activities in 1966 in the sale of Douglas Aircraft common stock. The S.E.C. is a "policeman” of the securities industry and was set up after the 1929 stock market crash to protect investors.
