Drug Belief 'A Fraud’

(N .Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright)

DUNDEE, August 27. Belief that the drug, cannabis (marijuana), enhanced the mind was described in Dundee as “one of the frauds of the age." Professor William Paton, of Oxford University’s pharmacology department, told the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science: “I am still waiting for a Benjamin Britten or a Henry Moore among the ranks of cannabis smokers.” Evidence he had from the universities was that using cannabis, far from improving the performance of students, was more likely to cause dropouts from college and life generally. Professor Paton estimated that between seven and 15 in every 100 cannabis users would eventually move on to “hard” drugs like heroin and cocaine.
