Course In Indonesian Cooking Planned
A course in Indonesian cooking has been arranged by the Indonesian Association in Christchurch. It will be held at the new Teachers’ Training College kitchen in Westwood Terrace, and will begin on September 4.
When members of the association expressed interest in such a course, Mrs Agatha Schwager, whose husband is
an Indonesian, was asked to be its supervisor.
Mrs Schwager, who is Dutch, learnt Indonesian cooking from her mother-in-law. In the two years she has been in Christchurch she has
cooked Indonesian meals regularly and found the ingredients, or substitutes, availably in local shops. The Suppers she has provided for the association made her a natural choice as supervisor for the new course. There will be six
classes on Wednesday evenings, and Mrs Schwager will instruct and supervise the cooking of two or three dishes at each lesson.
Her New Zealand friends have found her Indonesian
dishes very palatable, although she usually gives them the option of adding the chilli if the meal is really spicy. "Indonesian cooking Is
very exciting, and is similar to Indian cooking In some ways,” said Mrs Schwager. She hopes members of the public will attend the lessons. The classes are not restricted to association members, and 15 pupils can be accepted.
