Air travellers flying between Wellington and Christchurch or vice-versa will pay considerably more to see the glories of the Southern Alps by the proposed trans-Alpine service than if they used the direct route.

New fares announced by the National Airways Corporation show that passengers flying. between the two main centres via Nelson, Westport, and Hokitika will pay $l3 more for the view.

The present direct fare is $lO.BO. By the proposed

route, which also includes a change of aircraft at Hokitika, the fare will be $23.80. An N.A.C. spokesman said that as direct flights were available between Wellington and Christchurch, passengers wanting

to fly over the Alps had lo pay “a fare based on sectional charges.” The new service comes Into effect on December 20. The Christchurch-Hokitika fare will be $6.50, and for Christchurch-Westport, $l2.
