Team Seeking Help From The Army
The Technical centre-forward, A. Caine, has to report to Burnham for his 14 Weeks military training on September 4—three days before his club will play Eastern Suburbs (Auckland) in the national final of the Chatham Cup soccer competition.
However, Technical is hoping to make arrangements
for Caine to be given special leave so that he can take his place in the team. “I cannot say too much about the matter at this stage,” a club official, Mr L. Gray, said yesterday. “The club has had a sympathetic hearing from the Army authorities and we are hopeful dispensation will be given Caine. No decision has yet been made.” Technical hopes that Caine will be allowed to travel to Wellington for the final with his team-mates on the Thursday night ferry. If tjiat is not possible, the club will fly him to Wellington on the Friday. “Naturally, we would want him to be with the team all the time so that he can train with the players under Wellington conditions before the final,” Mr Gray said. “’However, if this does not prove convenient to the Army authorities we will be grateful for any help we can get.” Caine, the club’s leading goal-scorer in the southern league competition this season, is a key player in Technical’s bid to win the Chatham Cup for the second time in its seventh final appearance, and to bring the trophy to Canterbury for the first time since 1955. To Watch Opposition
The Technical coach, J. S. Chalmers, plans to visit Auckland this week-end, to watch Eastern Suburbs play in a northern league match against North Shore on Saturday.
