ADDINGTON MARKET Marked Fall In Ewe Prices; Wethers Also Ease

Fat-sheep prices were easier at the Addington market yesterday. Ewes, which had had a good sale over the previous two weeks, showed the most marked reduction.

Younger wethers had quite a good sale, but older wethers were well back on last week’s rates.

In the fat lamb section, the best butchers’ lambs were little short of last week’s good rates, but the plainer lambs eased 30c a head.

A large entry of fat cattle continued to sell strongly, although values eased up to $4. It was a nominal reduction, considering the price levels, for the top price in the steer section was $2OO.

Both quality and values were better in the pig section, the best of the weaners realising $lO.

Store Sheep

Ewes with lambs at foot made up a large part of the yarding in the store sheep section. Values, however, were not up to those of last week.

The store sheep yarding consisted of 650 hoggets, and 1060 adult sheep, 470 of them being ewes with lambs at foot. A sizeable gallery followed the ewe sale, but in contrast with last week, the supply was in excess of demand by the end of the sale. Prices for ewes with lambs at foot were at realistic levels, the best of the offering selling to $3.60 all counted, and others from $2.80 to $3.25.

There were several useful lots of breeding ewes due to lamb shortly. Practically all of them were full-woolled. Top sale of the day was $7.05 for some good quality Romneys, and there were sales of older breeding ewes at $5.80 to $6.20. with plainer ewes from $4.50 to $5. The hogget market showed little change on recent sales. There still did not appear to be any lift in values, in spite of the approach of spring. Quality generally was plain. The pick of the woolly wether hoggets sold to $5.20, with average from $4.50 to $5.84, and small down to $3.80. A pen of woolly Romney ewe hoggets realised $6.10. Sales of store sheep include: Hoggets: A. F. Croft (Omihi), 106 shorn Corriedale wethers at $4.15 to $4.70, 59 woolly Corriedales at $5.20; I. Mcßae (Ellesmere), 73 Romney ewes at $6.10. Adult sheep: Mrs J. I. Worner (Oxford), 28 ewes, with 28 lambs, at $3.10 all counted; A. D. Lochhead (Leeston), 199 halfbred ewes, with 239 lambs, at $3; K. H. Fisher (Greenpark), 209 in-lamb Romney ewes at $5.90 to $6.20; N. W. Skurr (Oxford), 95 three and fourshear Romney ewes, due now, at $7.05. Fat Lambs Fat lambs continued to sell well, although quality this week was not up to that of the last two sales. The yarding was 2300, compared with 2010 last week. While there was again a good number of butchers' lambs, the yarding included a much larger proportion of plain lambs. Where quality was comparable with last week, values were firm, but the plainer lambs were 30c easier. Values were:— Extra heavy lambs, $7.70 to $8.20. with odd sales to $8.70. Prime heavy, $7.20 to $7.60. Prime medium, $6.40 to $7. Lighter lambs, $5.60 to $6.25, with plain down to $5.30. Spring lambs, $5.20 to $6.20. Leading sales of fat lambs included:— Misses H. and C. Fat Sheep

The fat sheep market, which drew a yarding of 2300 head, did not have the strength of previous sales. Ewes were forward again in large numbers, and while the offering of wethers was much greater than last week, a large number consisted of older sheep. Most of the wethers were shorn, and the numbers of shorn ewes are also increasing week by week. The market opened with ewes selling well, with regular sales at more than $5, but by the end of selling, values had eased by 40c to 50c. The wether market was also easier. There were odd sales of good young woolly wethers at rates comparable with last week, but the majority of young shorn wethers were 30c easier, while the older plain wethers were 40c back. Values were:

Woolly wethers, $7 to $7.50, with odd sales to $8.70. Best shorn wethers, $6.60 to $6.90.

Steers made up the bulk of the offering, heifers and cows being forward in very small numbers. Over all, the market appeared to be easier by up to $4 a head, but there were stages when it was on a par with last week's market.
