11 Mile Trek
About 150 children and 20 adults are expected to take part in an 11-mile sponsored trek from Kaiapoi to Christchurch on Saturday to raise money to help the Save the Children Fund support a vocational training centre in Pusan, Korea.
The trek, which is being organised by the Kaiapoi subbranch of the fund, will be. gin at 9 a.m. at the corner of Ohoka Road, Kaiapoi, and the Main North Road. Each person will be sponsored at the rate of 5c a mile and it is expected that the first person will reach the finish, opposite the totem pole in Harper Avenue, in about three hours- and a half to four hours. At the finish they will be welcomed by the Mayor of Christchurch (Sir George Manning) and Lady Manning. The president of the subbranch (Mrs A. C. Peters) said last evening that the fund was grateful to the many Christchurch and Kaiapoi firms which had offered to be sponsors. Several persons had about 30 sponsors and one person bad about 46, she said.
Although the sub-branch at Kaiapoi had been established since February this was the first big appeal it had organised.
