TEMPLETON FARM

Transfer To Department

The farm of the Templeton Hospital and Training School passed into the control of the Department of Agriculture a month ago. The Medical Superintendent (Dr J. C. Marshall) says in his annual report that farming had become too mechanised and too scientific for the hospital’s patients and, anyway, the emphasis in their training had moved to industrial assembly work which was simple and repetitive. Dr Marshall recalls that, for many years, his institution was known as the “farm school” or "Templeton farm,” dating from the days when it was New Zealand’s first training project of this type. Three boys from the school were still employed on the farm and there was further scope for outdoor employment in the hospital garden and construction jobs. As well as industrial training, Templeton now offered kindergarten - type training leading to pre-industrial classes and the special school run by the Education Department
