RANDOM REMINDER
LIFE LINES
For a good many years, the Christchurch Junior Chamber (formerly of Commerce) has applied Itself to charitable works with a zest and efficiency which have reflected the comparative youth of its members, and their business skills. Today the Junior Chamber sets out on another venture—and it has had few more worthy ones, few which seem so certain of success. The Junior Chamber is setting out to raise funds for the purchase of a new boat for the Sumner Lifeboat Institution. The sum of $15,000 is needed for a second-hand but admirably
suitable craft; a new one would cost $BO,OOO, enough to make even the Junior Chamber blanch. A splendid scheme to raise the money has been devised. The citizens of Christchurch are to become philatelists. Yesterday the delivery to 76,000 homes of what could be described as little stamp albums was begun. It will be completed today. There are, spaces to affix 10 stamps. The stamps cost 10c each, and can be obtained from any one of 500 grocery shops in Christchurch. When the card is filled—and the idea is to buy one stamp a week for 10 weeks—it may be re-
turned to the appeal secretary, and then the donation of a dollar will be acknowledged, and the donor will become a member of the Sumner Lifeboat League. There is no need to produce the record of the Sumner Lifeboat Institution, which is magnificent; there is. no real need to commend the Junior Chamber’s scheme, which invites everyone to take part, at a very small cost, in providing a .vital service. It only needs to be added that there is no restriction on the number of stamps which may be bought: spare cards are readily available.
