Planning Regulations Discussed By Council
A case into which the provisions of the Town and Country Planning regulations entered led to discussion and some difference of opinion at the monthly meeting of the Ellesmere County Council. It concerned an application by a farmer to set aside an acre of land on his farm to permit his son to build a house. The son, it was said, worked on his father’s farm at week-ends and during peak periods, and had ideas of establishing a workshop on a comer section. He at present lived with his parents on the farm, intended
to get married soon, and did not wish to live in a township. Voicing his opposition, Cr R. S. Webb said it was a question whether the council should adhere to its planning scheme. Cr L. H. Johnson said that it was a case of a man who would not live in a township. He could not agree that the man should be forced; he had a right to choose. It was decided to grant the application, Cr Webb asking that his opposition be recorded. Another instance into which planning regulations entered concerned an application by a bus service company for permission to reerect on its section at Southbridge a garage which had been blown down by the April gale. The request was declined and it was agreed to advise the applicant that an alternative section was available.
After considering a report by the engineer on the various house properties it owned, the council agreed to replace the sexton’s house at the Ellesmere Public Cemetery, Leeston. The state of hydatids control in the Ellesmere County compared more than favourably with the position in other counties, said Mr M. W. Home, the control officer. Among 1390 dogs, dosed only one had been found with true hydatids. There were still some cases of sheep carcases being exposed.
