Thousands In Riots
(N Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) CHICAGO, August 27 Hundreds of riot-helmeted policemen wearing gas masks sprayed tear-gas into thousands of hippies, yippies and other demonstrators against the Vietnam war early today as they routed them from Lincoln Park and pursued fleeing bands through the North Side streets of Chicago. At least 50 people were arrested. Three policemen were injured and several journalists were clubbed during a nightlong series of encounters. Militant bands of demonstrators roved through the city, carrying their anti-Estab-lishment protest to the hotels in which the Democratic Party’s national convention delegations were staying, and then returned to the park for their third successive night confrontation with police. At least 10 policemen and 30 other persons had been treated at hospitals for injuries received in the earlymorning encounter.
