SKI-ING DEATHS

Children Frozen

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) THREDBO (Australian Alps), August 27.

Two children were found frozen to death early today by a mountain search team sweeping through blizzards above this little alpine village. The bodies of a 12-year-old girl and her I'4-year-old brother lay in snowdrifts on rugged Crackenback Mountain, only a mile from the village. Alpine rangers and police hunted the youngsters for nine hours after they failed to return from a day-long ski-ing trip. Police said the girl, Cathy Baker, apparently set off for help after her brother, lan, collapsed. Their huddled bodies were found 40 yards apart. Before dawn today, more than 30 searchers carrying powerful lanterns saw Cathy's brightly-coloured ski clothing. A doctor at the scene said the children died from extreme exposure. The children’s father is a barman at a village hotel.
