German Week
Sir, —As I cannot change from my usual pseudonym in this correspondence Mr Cottrell is welcome to my name if he applies to you. The basis of this German week that I find so offensive is evidently reciprocal trade, etc. Good! But are there not other countries more deserving of this exchange? After the war, while their adversaries were brought to ruin, the Germans started with a clean slate, no reparations, no war debt. Is it any wonder that they are a leading commercial nation today? Added to this, there is evidence of a return of their old herrenwolk arrogance. The scars of war heal quickly when the conflict is between honourable adversaries: but the extermination of millions of innocent men, women, and children in gas chambers by good Germans “just like us,” will take a power of living down. If Mr Cottrell can condone this, I can not.—Yours, etc., QUERCUS. ' August 26, 1968. |
