Title prospect
(")NE of New Zealand’s most technically - advanced weight-lifters, T. Ebert of Canterbury and his coach Mr J. Morrison, should prove an effective combination in Canterbury’s bid for a national weight-lifting title at the New Zealand Olympic weight-lifting championships at Whangarei on Saturday. Ebert recently jerked nearly 22 stone above his head at a bodyweight of about list 111 b. His main rivals in the middleweight division of the New Zealand championships are P. Ridgley and G. Hansford.
Making notable progress both in strength, speed and skill since recovering from a broken arm earlier this year, Ebert recently bettered New Zealand record poundages in convincing style during training. Weight-lifting has made notable progress in Canterbury recently and under Mr Morrison’s direction the Canterbury squad has been busy training to a peak at the Canterbury Weight-lifting Association's gymnasium. The squad is Ebert (middleweight), A. Roy, a former North Island middleweight title-holder and now secretary of the Canterbury Association, and W- Donovan (light-heavyweight). Canterbury will also be well represented by the wellperformed power lifters, A. Butcher and L. Sullivan who will compete in the “Mr New Zealand" physique contest held in conjunction with the New Zealand Olympic weight-lifting championships.
