TROTTING Owner Has 37 Sires At Stud In N.Z., Australia

"flu Pr«M** «PMUI Smiet INVERCARGILL. A former Auckland man, Mr N. Simpson, has built an empire all of his own in the standardised breeding business and he has a total of 37 sires at stud in Australia and New Zealand.

Now permanently domiciled at his Karamea Lodge Stud, at Castle HiD. near Sydney. Mr Simpson has 27 sires in Australia and 10 at the stud in New Zealand, and with odd exceptions all are American-bred. He has outdistanced *H other standardbred breeders in Australia and New Zealand and has also transferred the majority of his sires to Australia Mr Simpson first earoe into the trotting stud business in New Zealand by importing a number of Italian-bred sires, I most of which were of American breeding, at a time I when there was a restriction 1 on the importing of American 1 sires to this country. Prob- 1 ably the most successful of I the Italian imports was 1 Medoro. < Over the years Mr Simpson 1 has raced Ms horses exten- < sively in New Zealand, Aus- 1 tralia and America. His im- 1 nertation of sires has been on an even wider scale and i today he has almost 40 stal- 1 lions at the stud.

They include 27 in Australia, standing in Victoria, New South Wales. Queensland, and Western Australia.

In Victoria he has Diek Adios. which recently returned after four seasons at the stud in Southland, and whose 8350 fee is one of the highest of any horse in Australia.

Mr Simpson also has th* Adios horse. Thor Hanover drain 57 4-ssec). which stands at a fee of S3OO. and the Tar Heel horse, Trainer Hanover dmin 59 2-ssec). Morris Ede (2min 1 l-ssec). Thunder On, Gay Reveler, Intangible, Lucky Hanover and Good Report. all Ameriean-bred, are others standing in Victoria. All were at the stud in New Zealand for a time.

Yanko* Hanover, a New Zealand-bred horse by Smokey Hanover from Shirley Lawn (2min 7 Msec) i* the only Colon W-bred sin of the 13 Simpson-owned horse* doing stud duty in Victoria. The highest-priced sire is Smokey Hanover, a Billy Direct horse, which stood in New Zealand for some seasons. and might well have topped the New Zealand sire*' list had he remained in this country. He ha* sired two in the 2min list—Elegant Hanover and Smoke Cloud. Smokey Hatraver stands at a fee of S3OO. the American-bred stallion, Gee Lee Hanover (Imin 58sec). He is a dose relation ot Bret Hanover. Other representatives are Golden Adios, which is a three-quarter brother to Dick Adios and already the sire of 100 individual winners, Honest Time a brother to the Auck-land-owned sire Honest Master, William Way (2min, by King's Counsel), Welcome

Stranger (by Solicitor), Gene Direct by the top American sir% Gene Abbe, Ike Frost (sire of the top Auckland four-year-old Governor Frost) and Deep Adio* (sire of the Vic torian Derby winner Ascot King). Piebald Horse Another interesting member of the Simpson sirb strength is the New Zealand piebald stallion, Snow Time, which took a record of 2min 1 l-ssee, and was later sent to America. He is a son of Meadow Chief and the Dillon Hall mare, Snowflake, holder of the two-mile record of imin 19sec for a three-year-old filly for some years. Mr Simpson hu had a number of horses at th* stud in N*w Zealand over the years. Many of thee* are now permanently domiciled in Australia. But among those standing in New Zealand are Nephew Hal (sire of the Australian champion Halwes), Hi Lo's Forbes, a champion racehorse whose first crop* have been most successful, and th* Southland sire*, Good Point (2min 2-6*ec), Yankee Express (Imin 59 4-s**c), King Creed (2min), and Expreaa Direct, which is one of the few son* of Billy Direct (air* of Garrison Hanover) available to breeders.

Hodgen’s Surprise, Alfred Hanover (2min l-s«ec by Tar HCel), Nevele Gourmet (by Rodney) and Good Time Eden (by Good Time), are other Simpson sires in New Zealand.
