Aria Contest To Housewife
A housewife with three years singing tuition won an aria contest in Invercargill last week. Mrs Beverley Kench, of Christchurch, will use her $l5O prize money to further her studies.
She was awarded first place in the Southland Savings Bank aria contest, from 25 contestants, some with many
years singing experience. Contestants came from Canterbury, Otago, and Southland. Music gives Mrs Kench, a mother of two daughters aged three and six, an interest outside the home. When she decided she had progressed as far as possible with piano lessons (she won third place in the contest’s piano section) she took up singing. Her husband is also interested in singing and Mrs Kench is trying to persuade him to take lessons. Last week’s win has encouraged her to enter more competitions in the future. Oratorio and operatic work are her special interests.
