Complaints About Teachers

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, August 26. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) had unintentionally misled parents by saying in Parliament on Wednesday that school committees had power to deal with ' complaints against teachers, said the national secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute (Mr E. J. Simmonds) in Wellington today. Mr Hanan had said that the extension of the Ombudsman’s powers to education boards did not include cornplainfs against teachers, and that parents could follow other avenues such as complaining . about a teacher to the school committee.

Mr Simmonds said the Education Act, 1964, eliminated any power school committees had to deal with such complaints, and provided procedures whereby education boards dealt with these matters where formal action was required. If a parent felt something was wrong, the sensible thing to do was to talk with the teacher concerned, or with his head teacher, in the first instance. Should such a step not be satisfactory, the parent should write to the education board.
