TRAWLER LAID VP

‘Catches Not

Good Enough?

The trawler Taimoana I, which has been working out of Lyttelton this year with a joint New Zealand-Japanese crew, was laid up at Lyttelton yesterday and her crew paid off because of the poor catches off the Canterbury coast recently. The Taimoana I, which arrived in New Zealand from Japan last November as the Kotuku Maru, is operated locally by Taimoana Fisheries (N.Z.) Ltd, a subsidiary of the Taiyo Fishery Company, which is the largest enterprise of its kind in the world.

Two Japanese engineers will remain in the ship until Taimoana Fisheries has decided what the trawler’s future is to be. The chairman of directors (Mr A. G. Williams) said the recent catches were not enough to warrant continuing at present.
