Fire Damages Cabin In Seaway Princess
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, August 26.
Fire gutted an officer’s cabin in the Northern Steam Ship Company’s roll-on ship Seaway Princess at Auckland early this morning.
The fire started at 1.30 a.m About half a dozen members of the crew started to fight the fire with hand extinguishers, but the heat forced them back from the companionway. Four fire engines and 30 firemen arrived. Using breathing apparatus and high pressure fog guns, they had the fire under control in 40 minutes. Paintwork around the cabin,
and on the bridge and radio room directly above, was damaged by smoke. The vessel’s third engineer, Kevin Farrow, suffered burns and was treated at the Auck land Hospital, but not admitted.
The Seaway Princess had been due to sail tonight foi the South Island, but will be delayed at least a week for repairs.
