Talks On Shipping Policy Planned

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 26.

A “summit meeting” of shipping and allied interests will be held in Wellington, probably on December 6, to discuss New Zealand’s future maritime policy.

The Exports and Shipping Council, which is organising the meeting, hopes to have the chairman of the P and* O' Line (Sir Donald Anderson) as the main speaker. An Australian economist has also been invited to take part. The conference will discuss three aspects of maritime policy:

The investment of New Zealand capital in the British Conference Lines. The formation of a national shipping line. The replacement of the present contract system by the use of charter ships to carry New Zealand produce to world markets.

At the June meeting of the council, the chairman (Sir John Ormond) announced that the council would investigate the country’s future

maritime policy under these headings. A questionnaire has been sent to about 40 individuals and organisations throughout the country, with a request that the completed forms be returned to the council by September 30. The replies are expected to form the basis for discussions at the “summit” meeting. Several have been received already.
