SPEAKER’S RULING

Refusal To

Reverse

ffi.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON. Aug. 26.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives (Mr R. E. Jack) today refused to reverse his decision banning the use of a loud-speaker at a protest meeting in the grounds of Parliament this afternoon.

But he has made it clear he had the “greatest sympathy” for the aim of the lunchtime meeting—called by university students to condemn Russia’s invasion of Czechoslovakia.

The Speaker is concerned that the grounds of Parliament could become the “Hyde Park corner” of New Zealand if protest meetings and demonstrations were

allowed to become commonplace at Parliament

Mr Jack has turned down four or five applications for the use of loud-speakers in the Parliament grounds over recent months.
