Ashburton Competitions Festival Opens

The annual week of competitions held by the Ashburton Competitions Society began in Ashburton yesterday. Almost 500 competitors are taking part in the festival, which is being held in three different halls in Ashburton each day. Most competitors have entered in more than one class and, in all, 2319 entries have been received for the 505 classes, some from as far afield as Rotorua, Invercargill, and Greymouth. The competitions, which will go on all week, will end with a demonstration concert on Saturday. Considerable Interest was shown in the classes held yesterday, and audiences were rewarded with many good performances.
