Fire Stops Soccer
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NOTTINGHAM, (England), Aug. 24. Fire swept through a crowded grandstand at a soccer ground today, but police coolly evacuated. 35,000 spectators without loss of life. The blaze broke out in the players’ dressing rooms just before half-time in the first division game between Nottingham Forest and Leeds United.
It quickly engulfed the main stand, recently rebuilt for £lOO,OOO, then spread to the Nottingham club’s offices. The Leeds players lost all their equipment and clothing, and had to go home in their soccer gear. Ambulance officials said there were few minor casualties.
The game was abandoned.
