Foothills Smoke
Huge palls of smoke rising from the foothills in the Loburn district in the last three days have attracted attention for many miles. The fires are at Whiterock on the properties of Mr S. J. Bain, “Okuku Pass,” and Mr R. A. Marshall, “Horsford Downs," where gorse is being burned before new ground is broken In. The smoke rose high in the air before spreading to cover the hills over a wide area. At night the red glow could be seen from as far as Christchurch.
