Compensation To Farmers
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
WASHINGTON, Aug. 21.
The United States Army today agreed to pay 3U55000 compensation for 6000 sheep which died after a nerve gas test in Utah last March. But the Army Secretary (Mr Stanley Resor) said the payment, towards a damages claim of $U5376,685, did not constitute a finding that the Army was negligent. The Anschutz Land Company, of Denver, Colorado, which was awarded the $5OOO compensation, has also claimed damages for land which it says is now unusable. The amount the company is claiming has not been disclosed, but the Army says it will be settled later. The claim arose when herds of sheep, 20 to 25 miles away, died two days after the Army conducted a nerve gas test at its poison gas centre at the Dugway proving ground, Utah.
