23 Cricketers In Coaching Clinic
Twenty-three cricketers have been named by the New Zealand selectors and the cricket council coach (M. J. Horton) to take part in a coaching clinic at Christchurch during the week-end of September 7-8.
Nearly all of New Zealand’s leading players are included in the squad. The notable absentees are K. Thomson (Canterbury), J. C. Alabaster (Otago), and the fast bowlers, G. A. Bartlett (Central Districts), R. S. Cunis and R. E. Sutton (Auckland).
Thomson will leave for the Olympic Games next week. Announcing the squad yesterday, the chairman of the council’s board of control (Mr J. G. Leggat) said it should not be regarded as a short list
“It is a group whom, It is thought, are most likely to benefit from this type of preparation," he added. Mr Leggat said no wicketkeepers had been included as it is intended to hold special wicket-keeping classes later in the year. Also, suitable amenities would not be available at the Hagley Sports Centre, where the
clinic will be held, under the direction of Mr Horton.
The squad, which includes seven players each from Auckland and Canterbury, is: M. G. Burgess, H. J. Howarth, R. J. Kasper, J. G. Kemp, T. W. Jarvis, G. E. Vivian, J. R. Syme (Auckland), W. J. Mitchell (Northern Districts), B. E. Congdon, V. Pollard. M. L. Ryan, B. W. Yuile (Central Districts), M, J. Coles, R. O. Collinge. B. A. G. Murray, B. W. Sinclair (Wellington), J. W. Burtt, G. T.- Dowling, B. F. Hastings, R. C. Merrin, R. C. Motz, J. M. Mclntyre, B. R. Taylor (Canterbury).
