Schools’ Holiday Tournaments

HOCKEY Chrlrtchurch

Hagley High School will meet the Rankin Cup holder, Christchurch Boys* High School, in the final of the secondary schools tournament at Riccarton High School today. Section play will be completed in the morning but these games cannot affect the major placings. Hagley showed considerable improvement to beat Pukekohe High School and Nelson College to win the harder section. Christchurch took some time to settle against the bustling tactics of Napier Boys’ High School but finally won comfortably. Results: —

Linwood High School and Auckland Grammar will meet in the final today of the tournament at Auckland. In the semifinals, Linwood beat Kamo High School, 2-1. The game was very fast with good constructive passing and hard tackling.

Linwood began strongly and was awarded a penalty after only three minutes of play. It was missed and for much of the rest of the spell Kamo was in command, scoring a goal and leading 1-0 at half-time.

In the second half Linwood levelled the score when R. Parry netted, and from then on Kamo wilted under severe Linwood pressure, eventually conceding a second penalty from which B. Beaumont scored the winning goal. Results.— \

Wanganui Convincing wins yesterday over Taranaki and Hawke's Bay made Wanganui favourite to win the Hatch Cup primary schools' tournament for the first time. Wanganui assured Itself of a place in today’s semi-finals by Its double success and is the only unbeaten team. Canterbury and Wellington share top place in Section A, each with five wins In six attempts. Canterbury and Wellington are likely to Join Wanganui and Auckland as the semifinalists. Results:—

Invercargill In an exciting final match, Wellington High School drew, 0-0, with Heretaunga College, Wellington winning the tournament by finishing one point ahead of Heretaunga. Christchurch Burnside, which scored 44 goals and conceded none in Its six games, won the South Island secondary schools’ girls’ hockey tournament when it beat Avonside, 4-0, in the final. Burnside’s line combination In the forward line, with the Canterbury representatives, J. Mouat and L. Baylis prominent enabled' it to mount a series of penetrative attacks. On defence Burnside was sound and covered quickly. Mouat (three) and Baylis scored goals. In the semi-finals, Burnside reversed a previous inter-school result by beating Darfield, 2-0, and Avonside beat an unlucky Methven with a hit over the back in the thirty-third minute of extra time.

SOCCER Invercargill Canterbury won . the South Island under-16 tournament which ended yesterday. The final results were: Canterbury 7, Nelson X: Otago 2. South Canterbury 2; North Otago 3 Southland 2.
