N.I. Players Likely To Win S.I. Badminton

The South Island badminton championships, which will begin in Christchurch tonight, should be a good guide to form for the national titles two days later at Dunedin.

J. W. S. Compton (Wellington), fresh from a win in the North Island and Auckland championships last week, will have a tougher match when he meets the national champion, R. H. Purser (Taranaki), who did not enter those tournaments.

Compton is seeded second in the South Island championship and is a member of the

New Zealand youth team to tour Australia in September. Purser has been the national champion three times in the last six years. The women’s singles will give Canterbury players a chance to compete against the best New Zealand has to offer. Mrs G. Middleberg (Auckland), the first seed in the singles, is a member of the national team to play Indonesia for the Über Cup in September. Misses R. Glenie (Auckland) and G. Steel (Wellington), the second and third seeds, are in the youth team. The championships will begin this evening and continue until Saturday evening. The semi-finals will be held on Saturday afternoon, and the finals that evening.
