Christchurch Rail Services Review
(New Zealand Press Association)
GISBORNE, August 21.
A warning, that four railway services between major cities would be next to come under review with a view to phasing out passenger rail-cars, was given by the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) in Gisborne tonight.
The services affected were between Auckland and Rotorua, Wellington and Napier, Christchurch and Picton, and Christchurch and Dunedin. Reviews of these services would take place up to 1970. Mr Gordon said that publicity given to areas where rail services had already been curtailed did not seem to get through to people.
“It is only fair to warn people in these other districts that these services will be the next to come under review,” he said. “Unless we get the railways paying, or get a rail-car which can give the service in New Zealand conditions, we will eventually have to phase out all rail-car services,” said Mr Gordon.
