Stipend Rises

Legislation seeking a 5 per cent increase in the minimum stipends paid to curates, deaconesses and vicars will be introduced to the Christchurch Diocesan Synod in October by the standing committee of synod.

This would increase the minimum stipends of vicars from $2115 to $2220, and of first year curates and deaconesses from $1450 to $1520, said the diocesan registrar (Mr J. C. Cottrell). Last year the synod approved a 4.2 per eent increase to the minimum stipends, he said. Mr Cottrell said that several years ago synod directed that the standing committee, which comprises 12 clergymen and 12 members of the laity, should each year look at the minimum stipends in relation to the cost of living. It did not always follow that synod would approve the increase. In some areas clergymen themselves had opposed increases and it had been the laity which had forced the issue.
