Support For Heath

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright)

LONDON, Aug. 19.

The proposal by the leader of the Conservative Opposition (Mr Edward Heath) to restore a Commonwealth military force in Singapore has been welcomed by the Liberal newspaper, the “Observer.”

The newspaper says: “The proposal has the merit of neither being very grandiose nor of hankering to restore a British imperial role east of Suez.”

Speaking In Canberra, Mr Heath had said that Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore should combine to raise a joint force in Singapore to maintain a Commonwealth military presence in the area. The “Observer” says it is a pity Mr Heath did not go a step further and propose Britain support for a primarily Asian peace-keeping system based on Singapore.
