TROTTING Great Adios Looks Much Improved

Great Adios looked improved as a result of his race last Saturday when he worked with Trafalgar at Addington Raceway yesterday morning. Clandeboye and Waitaki Elect, rivals in the Canterbury Stakes, also went pleasingly.

Most of the horses which raced on the first day of the meeting were let off with easy tasks. The horses worked next to the rails on a fast track.

No sectional times could be taken for some of the earlier workers as the course was blanketed in a heavy fog for almost two hours. Great Adios was kept back to Trafalgar at the end of an easy 12 furlongs in 3min 18 l-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 2 4-ssec, and the final quarter in 30 l-ssec. Great Adios went a sound race in the Louisson Handicap. and although he finished tenth, he was less than eight lengths from the winnrr. There was merit in his effort

as he w*« three wide for more than six furlong* and he wa* not asked for a serious effort when he began to shorten stride nea rthe furlong post. He will be a much more difficult proposition on the second day of the meeting. Thunder Royal finished a length in front of Landlord, with Waitaki Elect close up, at the end of 12 furlongs in 3min 19 4-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 2 4-ssec, and the final quarter in 29 4-ssec. It was a particularly smart run on the part of Waitaki Elect, which will this week be driven by D. J .Townley. Landlord joined A. J. Bourne's team after the first day of the national meeting. He is carrying plenty of condition but might not be long showing worth-while form. Highland Globe took 3mln 25 4-ssec for a solo run over 12 furlongs. No sectional times were taken. Highland Globe is coming to hand well for L. O. Thomas. Sound Run Spry, pacing free-legged, went away from the twomile post and after half a mile he picked up Clandeboye. which was easing down at the finish after taking 3min 22sec for the 12 furlongs, the last half -mile in Imin 1 3-ssec, and the final quarter in 30 3-ssec. Clandeboye was disappointing when he finished fourth in the Waitaki Hanover Stakes at the Kurow meeting earlier in the month. He has trained on quite well since then and could be much more difficult to beat in the Canterbury Stakes on Saturday.

Kaikoura Chief and Benmore were running on strongly at the end of 12 furlongs in 3nrin 23 3-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 5 l-ssec, and the final quarter in 31 3-ssec. Benmore ran Beat Time to a fairly close decision last week, and on Saturday he will run up

against Barrhlll in the Queen Mary Handicap. Even ao, he will be a grand place prospect.

Break Through, Seven Nights and Double Step jogged over 12 furlongs, the last half mile in Imin Bsec being the fastest section. Break Through wu under a strong hold at th* finish. If he begins cleanly, he could surprise in the Winter Handicap on Saturday. Good Trotting Mister Chips and Rannach Lad finished ahead of Goodray at the end of 12 furlongs in 3min 19 4-ssec, the last half mile in Imin 4 3-ssec, and the final quarter in 81 l-ssec. It wu a sound run on the part of Rannach Lad, which trotted the 12 furlongs in about Smin 17 4-Ssec. He wu rather unlucky when fourth in the Christchurch Handicap lut Saturday. He will again take beating this week. Cathpete finished ahead at Doctor Scott and Patriarch’s Son after an easy 12 furlongs in 3min 24sec, the last half mile in Imin 5 4-ssec. Doctor Scott hu taken no harm from his second to Erin’s Smile last Saturday. Marbryn wu given several rounds at a sound pace. She could be a sound prospect in the Queen Mary Handicap. Beat Time looks to have thrived since his wins at the Kurow meeting and at Addington Raceway lut Saturday. He wu given solid pace work and went keenly all the way. He will be a firm favourite to gain hi* sixth win from seven starts when he contests the Wildwood Handicap on Saturday. Jay Queen, a chanc* in the Improvers' Handicap, worked free-legged over 12 furlongs, sprinting her final quarter in 30 3-ssec. She finished fourth in the corresponding race last Saturday and could do better this week. Single Cash and Tryout were given light exercise. Both look in great heart
