DROP IN RETAIL TRADE NOTED

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 20.

The volume of retail trade for the quartetended June was lower than that for the same period last year.

Retail turnover per capita during the last quarter was also lower than for the quarter ended in March, says the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). Early returns in the survey of retail trade for the three months to. June 30 indicate that the total retail turnover during this period was about s3BBm.

This was about 1.4 per cen; higher than in the June quarter last year and about 2.9 per cent higher than in the March. 1968, quarter.

Corrected for seasonal fluctuations, and with adjustments to remove the effects of price and population changes, retail turnover is estimated to have been about 1.8 per cent per head less than in the March quarter of 1968. Real trade, as expressed in the constant dollars figures, is lower than in the June quarter of 1967. The June-to-June upward movement in actual turnover in current dollars is more than cancelled out by price changes, says the Government Statistician.
