Obituary MR T. W. HUGHES
The death has occurred in Christchurch of Mr Thomas William Hughes, who for his services as a naval recruiter in the South Island in World War 11 was awarded the British Empire Medal. He was 84.
Mr Hughes served in more than 30 warships. His first was H.M.S. Black Prince, a square-rigged sailing ship.
Born at Ballymote, Ireland, in 1884, Mr Hughes joined the Royal Navy at 16 and served in World War I. taking part in the Battle of Jutland.
In 1921 he came to New Zealand and served as master at arms in H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel.
Mr Hughes is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.
