I The Franz Josef Glacier, after an advance of about i 1250 ft—which began in mid 11965 and continued until the [middle of last year—is once again in retreat. The terminal face, in contrast to its previous height of J more than 200 ft, has been re- ! duced to a mere 40ft or 50ft. j The retreat of the terminal ■lface at its centre (which approximates the centre of the photographs), is about 300 ft. while at the extreme edges it is about 150 ft, says Mr W. Sara, officer in charge of the Geological Survey at Greymouth.
“Over the last few months, little backward movement of the terminal face has been noted, the main change being in the much-reduced height of the terminal face,” he says. The Fox Glacier, says Mr Sara, has shown the same trend to retreat, but not to quite the same degree.
The Fox Glacier’s last advance began slightly later in 1965 than the Franz Josef’s, and continued until the end of last year. “Its advance amounted to about 500 ft, considerably less than the Franz Josef,” Mr Sara says. “It shows signs of fairly marked shrinkage at the terminal face, but probably not as pronounced as the Franz Josef. Its retreat up to the present is about 100 ft.” The upper photograph was taken on October 4, 1967, and the lower on August 16, 1968 I They are of the central part lof the Franz Josef terminal face, and show clearly how the glacier has wasted in the last 10 months. In the later photograph, the black blot in the centre, at the bottom of the main ice fall, is a part of the valley floor jutting out through the ice.
