R.N.Z.N.V.R. STRENGTH

Reduction In Division

The Canterbury division of the Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve will reduce its recruiting activities and so reduce its strength by 30.

This action comes after the announcement by the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) last week of a number of measures aimed at reducing defence costs by about $50,000 a year throughout the country. The commanding officer of the division (Commander R. F. Sanderson) said yesterday that the economic measures announced by Mr Thomson should not materially affect the training role or the function of the naval reserve. The cuts would not affect equipment, he said. Mr Thomson said that the national reserve would be reduced from 600 to 400. In Canterbury this order meant a 20 per cent reduction in costs.

Commander Sanderson said there would be no dismissals of reservists. The reduction would be gradual. Admission procedures would be tightened to ensure that officers and ranks measured up to the minimum training requirements.
