WORSHIP SHARED
Vatican Critical
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ROME, August 20. The Vatican says that Roman Catholics who take part in inter-denominational religious ceremonies are deliberately going against the church’s teaching. An article in the Vatican newspaper, “L’Osservatore Romano,” by a prominent expert on the ecumenical movement, Padre Carlo Boyer, said yesterday Roman Catholics must adhere to the ritual of the eucharist.
The expert condemned a ceremony held in Paris during the student riots earlier this year and another religious meeting in Uppsala, in Sweden, at the assembly of the World Council of Churches.
Referring to the 60 Christians who met in a private Paris house, Padre Boyer said: -“They knew, especially the Catholics, that their church prohibited such an act.”
While it was clear that Roman Catholics taking part in the Uppsala ceremony were not acting in an official capacity, their action was still not in line with church teaching.
They had gone against the doctrine of their church in the hope that the doctrine might change in the future.
“Even those who find themselves amid the fever of a revolution, or in the excitement of a great assembly who want to follow the way of the Holy Spirit, should choose to obey the church rather than disobey,” he said.
