Voting Campaign A “get-out-and-vote” campaign by the South Christchurch Jaycees received the support of the City Council last evening, a grant of $lOO being made towards expenses. The campaign would be

arranged around a tubby comic character “Hector the Elector,” the council was told. He would be featured with slogans encouraging people to vote. The campaign will cover metropolitan Christchurch. Provincial Chambers An open day will be held at the Provincial Council Chambers on September 15 to promote public interest in the historic building. Arrangements for the open day were made at a meeting of the Civic Trust last evening. Vietnamese Orphans Since the announcement in “The Press” and in other newspapers throughout New Zealand yesterday that a “small number” of Vietnamese orphans would be available for adoption in New Zealand, the Rev. R. M. O’Grady, resettlement officer for the National Council of Churches, has received dozens of inquiries from prospective adoptive parents. “I’ve had toll calls from Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Invercargill, and Manapouri,” he said last evening. He has referred all inquirers to “Operation Child Rescue, P.O. Box 2500, Wellington,” and invites other persons interested to write to the same address.

Big Seed Order The Amalric is expected to leave Lyttelton today with a large consignment of seed for Chile. Earlier this winter, the Government of Chile called tenders for the supply of more than 580 tons of small seeds from New Zealand, and Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd, won a contract for the supply of 570 tons. It consisted of 290 tons of perennial ryegrass, 170 tons of Hl ryegrass, 90 tons of white clover and 20 tons of Ariki ryegrass. There were also small parcels of turnip, swede and chou moellier seed. Most of the seed was loaded into the Amalric yesterday, having been drawn from as far as Blenheim and Oamaru. The Amalric is expected to sail to Napier today to load the remainder of the- order.

Earthquake Fund A gift of $34.03 has been handed to the Red Cross Society by employees of F. and T. Carpets, Ltd, for victims of the West Coast earthquake, said the secretary-manager of the society’s North Canterbury centre (Mr R. J. Lipscombe) yesterday.
