MARCHES IN CITY
Council Fixes Policy
The Christchurch City Council last evening adopted a policy for demonstration marches.
Assembly in Victoria Square will not be permitted, but Cranmer Square and Latimer Square will be available for meetings.
Marches of any kind, whether in single file or columns of three, win not be permitted on the roadway during peak traffic hours. Single file in small groups on the footpath will be allowed, provided the size and wording of placards are approved by the Town Clerk and the number of marchers is limited to prevent disruption to pedestrian traffic. Distribution of printed matter will not be permitted except in special circumstances. Promoters of the march will have to sign an undertaking that all directions of police or traffic officers will be carried out without hesitation, and an approved official of the organisation must be responsible for proper control of the assembly, march and dispersal.
