KAOLIN CLAY
Possibility Of Plant (From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Aug. 11. The possibility of a pilot plant to process high grade kaolin clay for experimental purposes being established at White Horse Hill. 23 miles from Westport, or at Westport itself, was good, a Christchurch businessman said on Saturday. Mr J. W. R. Byfield, an industrial chemist who is also manager of a Buller syndicate, said the group held prospecting rights over 360 acres at White Horse Hill.
Companies in Australia and the United States had expressed keen interest in the clay, and were awaiting a full and accurate evaluation of quantity and quality. Mr Byfield said a preliminary and “inexpert assessment” put the total deposit at sufficient for 30 or 40 years work.
A full-scale survey of the field would be undertaken soon.
