HIGHWAY CLOSED

GREYMOUTH, Aug. 11. Heavy rain in South Westland has blocked State Highway No. 6 at Lake Wahapo, between Hokitika and Franz Josef. The Waitangi River filled the lake overnight and it back-flooded on to the highway this afternoon. Late this afternoon the river was still rising and there was two feet of water across the road. Ministry of Works officials in Greyniouth tonight could give no indication when the road would be open again.
