HEAVY LOSS
Marist XV Sluggish
UNIVERSITY B 22: G. Lucas (2), P. James and M: Beveridge tries; G. A. Wallis two penalty goals and a conversion. MARIST 8: K. Miles a try; B. McAlister a penalty goal and a conversion. ~.
Unable to contain a bustling, lively University pack which gave its aggressive backs plenty of opportunities, a sluggish and purposeless Marist team suffered another heavy defeat.
The University forwards, admirably led by A. Bowes, did not allow the usually solid Marist forwards to settle in tight play and their speed to the ball and quickness in rucking kept the game flowing.
Quicker. more resourceful, and far more adventurous, the University backs produced splendid attacking Rugby. M. Brown ran strongly and passed quickly, and his first fiveeighths, S. Bowater, initiated many attacking movements with his speed and clever sidestepping. Lucas ran strongly at centre and Wallis also made some good runs on the left wing. G. Fraser was outstanding in the loose for University and showed himself as a forward of undoubted promise. M. Beveridge was prominent in many passing rushes and he and Fraser upset the Marist inside backs with their speed and vigour. There is little that can be said in Marist's favour. The forwards were run ragged by University and the backs showed little enterprise on attack. Referee: Mr D. J. Whiley.
