REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY
The Ranfurly Shield holder, Hawke’s Bay, beat South Canterbury, 19-12, in their Rugby fixture at Fraser Park, Timaru, on Saturday.
Although faster in the backs and having a huge weight and height advantage in the forwards, Hawke’s Bay was contained for all but the final 10 minutes. It was beaten overall by a tenacious pack which won the line-outs, 23-22, and gained a marked superiority in the rucks.
For Hawke’s Bay. K. Crawford (2), J. Dougan. D. Smith and M. Duncan scored tries; P. Carney kicked two conversions. For South Canterbury, A. MacFarlane kicked two penalties, M. Twaddell one penalty, and P. Rodick a dropped goal. Results of other matches at the week-end were:
