SCIENTIFIC PANEL
Use By Park Board
The Arthur’s Pass National Park Board will set up a scientific panel to advise the board on sbme aspects of its planning and operations. This was decided at a meeting of the board at Arthur’s Pass on Saturday. A letter from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research to the park’s chief ranger (Mr P. Croft) said the department felt science had something ’o contribute to the full utilisation of national parks. The Tongariro board had already made a great deal of use of such a scientific advisory group.
Members of the board inspected an old gaol at Bealey which has historical associations with the Arthur’s Pass region with a view to having it moved to a new site and restored as a historic building. Park staff are investigating the history of the building. They have learned that it was used as a station for an armed constabulary detachment, and that its probable original site was where the Bealey Hotel stood. The board is considering moving the building to Klondike Corner.
Car Hits Pole.—Head and leg injuries were suffered by Barry John Peoples, of 262 Milton Street, when a car struck a pole in Centaurus Road at 1.20 a.m. on Saturday. He was admitted to Christchurch Hospital.
